Maple Leaf Reads - February
Maple Leaf Reads - February
February’s Maple Leaf Reads is a collection of activities based on books written by Canadian authors.
Reading to my students is the highlight of my day! I love sharing my favourites with them and discovering new books from their selections during our weekly visit to the school library.
As a Canadian, I try to expose my students to books from Canadian authors and this resource is a result.
February’s Books
• Viola Desmond Won’t Be Budged! – Jody Nyasha Warner
• The Water Princess - Susan Verde*
• Just One Goal! – Robert Munsch
• You’re Mean, Lily Jean – Frieda Wishinsky
*Susan Verde is an American author. This book was illustrated by Canadian-born Peter H. Reynolds. I was looking for books for Black History Month and fell in love with this one.
For each book, there are activities to expand upon the read aloud:
• Comprehension Focus
A Comprehension Check is included for each book for students to recount facts from the story and/or do some inferring. There are also response pages for the comprehension focus.
• Grammar Focus
For the grammar focus, there are task cards and a recording sheet, worksheets, and for some books there are matching games.
• Vocabulary Activities
There are vocabulary cards for the word wall, matching cards and a matching worksheet (word-definition), and a list of definitions for your reference.
• Whole Group Activity
The suggestion for a whole group activity will typically be an anchor chart about the comprehension or grammar focus.
• Math Prompt
A number talk prompt or open-ended question is included to add a bit of engagement!
How can I use the activities?
• Add the activities to your literacy centres
• Use during a guided reading or small group lesson
• Independent activities for your high-flyers
This resource is also perfect for sub plans. Leave the story and its corresponding activities for your sub and you’re set!
Please note:
This resource was created for students in Grades 2 and 3. Some of the activities may be challenging for grade 2 students depending on the time of the year and some activities may be too easy for grade 3 students. There are many activities included allowing you to differentiate and choose what works best for the students in your class from year to year.
